Symbols and What They Mean
This symbol is used to designate organic food products, viz., those cultivated without the use of pesticides and chemical fertilizers.
Institute for Ethical and Environmental Certification, is an organization which certifies companies whose business practices reflect strong ethical, environmental and social values.
This symbol identifies those products that have been certified in accordance with the rules established by the USDA-NOP for organic food products. It is an essential requirement for those organic foods imported into the U.S. The National Organic Program (NOP) is part of the US Department of Agriculture (USDA). Those who want to sell organic products in the American market must be certified according to NOP. Furthermore, those who make the ingredients that go into the production of an organic food product must also be certified by NOP.
This certification (rule UNI EN ISO 22005/2008) attests to the control over the origin and all successive stages of the transformation of a food product, the filiera or food product "traceability chain,” in order to guarantee its absolute genuineness, e.g.: type of seed, type/method of cultivation, name of the producer, place of storage/warehousing, the type/nature of processing and packaging/wrapping used. A product with this certification has been monitored along each development stage, “from seed to consumer”.
